The steep banks of the longest river in Germany are home to some of the region’s most tranquil beauty and picturesque towns.
On a coach holiday to the region you can experience a different town of this region each day and see the many fairytale castles and vineyards that cling to the banks of the Rhine from a fabulous cruise. One of the main attractions of a serene cruise down the Rhine is without doubt Lorelei Rock, where, according to legend, a beautiful blonde maiden lured sailors to their death with her siren songs.
Rhine Valley, Germany
The ancient city of Cologne is the oldest in the region and has a distinctive character, perhaps best characterised by its imposing gothic cathedral and the 12 Romanesque churches which dominate the skyline. The city has a thriving cultural scene and has plenty of museums and attractions to visit. As the Rhine merges into the Moselle you come to the medieval town of Koblenz where you will find narrow sweeping alleyways and some of the area’s finest architecture. Here you can see the baroque palace of Ehrenbreitstein clinging to the hillside and enjoy spectacular panoramic views on the car cable which suspends above the river.
Boppard is equally as idyllic, with colourful buildings lining the promenade and lively squares to be found in the centre whilst in Rudesheim you can experience the famous Drosselgasse, often described as the “merriest street in the world”, which was perhaps derived by the many bars that line the cobbled street where you can sample the local beer and famous wine.
