Vienna

Prepare to be enthralled by the unrivalled splendour and sophistication of Vienna.

The city’s character is handed to it by a feast of spectacular imperial palaces from the legacy of the powerful Habsburg monarchy, most of which are located within the city’s Old Town, and are well worth exploring on foot or from a romantic horse-drawn carriage.

Trace 700 years of Hadsburg rule and be seduced by the opulent architecture of the Belvedere and Schonbrunn palaces before heading to the wonderfully elaborate Hofburg Palace complex, whose walls contain numerous museums and one of Vienna’s most famous exports, the Spanish Riding School. Take a tour of the stables or watch the incredible prancing Lipizzaner stallions during a daily rehearsal show.

During your coach break in Vienna the spire of Stephan’s Cathedral is always following you. Take time to appreciate its elaborately tiled rooftop and scale the South Tower for incredible panoramas of the city.

Known as the City of Music, Vienna is all about music. It was where world-famous composers such as Mozart, Schubert and Strauss wrote most of their music. Music fills the city air and you will be spoilt for choice by the live performances you can catch in the city’s 50 theatres.

Head to the Golden Room of Musikverein to see the famous Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra play iconic waltzes, catch an opera at the Staatsoper, or listen to the Vienna Boys' Choir at the MuTh.

Meanwhile, Vienna’s culture can also be explored in the city’s 100 museums and galleries. See paintings from Old Masters and a rich coin collection at the Kunsthistorisches Museum Quarter, before heading to the Museum Quarter to see art from acclaimed Austrian artists, Egon Schiele and Gustav Klimt, at the Leopold Museum or contemporary pieces at MUMOK.

End a day’s sightseeing with mouth-watering petit fours and Sachertorte (traditional chocolate cake) at one of the opulent Viennese coffee houses or enjoy heaty dishes such as Wienerschnitzel, Tafelspitz (boiled beef) and goulash, in one of the many Biesin.
