Seaside resorts don’t come more striking than Ilfracombe.
Located on the dramatic North Devon coast, the town is surrounded by secluded coves and beaches which provide enviable seascapes in every direction.
Most activity in Ilfracombe is centred on its natural harbour which is set against the stunning backdrop of St Nicholas Chapel and overlooked by a towering bronze statue by internationally renowned artist Damien Hirst.
Here you can watch the local fishermen going about their trade or climb aboard a boat cruise to nearby Lundy Island, a small isolated island which is home to Britain’s tallest lighthouse and unique wildlife including sika deer, puffins, Lundy ponies, goats and seals. It’s a fascinating tour that’s well worth a visit during your coach break and provides endless photo opportunities.
The quayside features a collection of elegant white and pastel coloured Victorian and Edwardian buildings, which today are home to enticing boutiques, restaurants and coffee shops serving delicious cream teas as well as obligatory fish n chip shops, where you can taste the day’s catch.
Ilfracombe’s attractions provide a fascinating insight into the local culture.
At Ilfracombe Aquarium you can journey through seven zones which replicate the local waters from Exmoor Stream to the Atlantic Ocean. Come face to face with the local marine life in its natural habitat, including octopus, cuttlefish, lobsters and rays.
You can also immerse yourself in the town’s heritage at Ilfracombe Museum which features displays about the local maritime and military past, plus curiosities such as a two-headed kitten and pickled bats!
No coach trip to Ilfracombe is complete without experiencing the Tunnels Beaches, a network of four tunnels that provide unique access to the coastline, where you can relax or trawl the rock pools.
