Over twenty years on from the release of the hit film, the stage production of The Lion King continues to re-write the history books
Not only is The Lion King the highest grossing musical of all time, having taken an astonishing £3.8billion worldwide at the box office, but has been seen by over 80 million people worldwide and has won countless theatre awards, including six Tony Awards, two Olivier’s and a Grammy
The Lion King is a powerful story which follows the journey of a young lion cub called Simba and his destiny to rule the Pride Lands one day as heir to King Mufasa, much to the resentment of his wicked Uncle Scar.
When tragedy strikes and his father is killed, Simba is tricked into believing he was responsible for his untimely death and runs away, leaving Scar and his nasty hyenas to rule.
But as Simba grows up, and with a little help from his friends; Timon the meerkat, and Pumbaa the warthog, he realises he must return to the kingdom to restore The Circle of Life.
Whilst at its heart is an uplifting story that resonates with audiences of all ages, what really sets The Lion King apart from every other stage show is how its award-winning director Julie Taymor re-creates the vast expanse of the African Plains and its animals through inventive puppet wizardry, extravagant costumes and special effects.
Prepare to be astonished by the wonderful opening sequence as a parade of antelopes, wildebeest, cheetahs, elephants and giraffes propelled by actors stampede the aisles and surge the stage to celebrate the Circle of Life.
It’s a real visual feast that explodes with colour in every direction, and is guaranteed to give you goosebumps!
Polished off with authentic percussive African beats and chants, plus an award-winning score by Elton John and Tim Rice that includes hits such as ‘Circle of Life’, ‘Can You Feel The Love Tonight’ and ‘Hakuna Matata’, The Lion King is musical theatre at its mesmeric best.
