Perhaps best known as the hometown of the famous playwright William Shakespeare, Stratford Upon Avon is now a popular tourist destination located on the River Avon.
Characterised by its beautifully preserved timbered tudor buildings and with stunning rural Warwickshire scenery surrounding this medieval market town, it’s easy to see why visitors flock to this market town on coach tours time and time again.
Historic, Stratford upon Avon
The Shakespearean houses dotted throughout the area provide a great insight into the family life and works of one of Britain’s most famous sons. You can visit his birthplace on Henley Street, the family home of his future wife Anne Hathaway, as well as the farm where his mother Mary Arden grew up as a child. If time’s still on your side you can also pay a visit to Nash’s House and New Place, a house bought by William Shakespeare in 1597, as well as Hall’s Croft, the home of his daughter Susanna Shakespeare and her husband John Hall. Meanwhile a journey through Shakespeare’s life wouldn’t be complete without visiting his final resting place in Holy Trinity Church.
Down by the riverbanks you can enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the River Avon on a gentle boat cruise, passing the world-famous Royal Shakespeare Company where you may be able to catch one of the bard’s famous plays in the evening.
