Up Helly Aa - Festival 2019
Up Helly Aa is a tradition that originated in the 1880’s, a celebration of Shetland history, skill and spirit, a marvellous display that takes place in the bustling capital of Lerwick, honouring the Vikings who once occupied and ruled the land. Drawing visitors worldwide this incredible fire festival takes 364 days to organise and lasts just one day and night, comprising in a series of marches and visitations, culminating in a torch-lit procession and the burning of a galley. A superb spectacle led by the Guizer Jarl, the head of the festival with squads of men in Viking disguise.

DAY ONE: Depart Glasgow and travel north to Aberdeen where we join the Northlink Ferry to Lerwick.
DAY TWO: Arrive in Lerwick early morning with the rest of the day at leisure. Check in at hotel late afternoon.
DAY THREE: Day at leisure in Lerwick with the chance to experience Up Helly Aa, comprising in a series of marches and visitations, culminating in a torch-lit procession and the burning of a galley.
DAY FOUR: Guided tour of Shetland.
DAY FIVE: Check out hotel after breakfast, day at leisure in Lerwick depart early evening to join the Northlink Ferry to Aberdeen.
DAY SIX: Travel homeward.
